International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies
Newsletter Vol 2 - No 1 | September 2018
I attended my first ISSVA Workshop in 1992 in Denver, Colorado, hosted by Wayne Yakes. My recollection (vague because it was 26 years ago) is that there were 40 to 50 people in attendance, and perhaps 20 to 30 abstracts presented. The big thrills for me? Meeting John Mulliken (I had just read the first edition of his textbook and was so impressed) and meeting Odile Enjolras – both for the first time. Odile was the only other dermatologist at the meeting(!) but I knew her through her writings and was excited to meet her. She became a mentor, role model, and great friend. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know her still miss her formidable intellect and gentle presence. I didn’t know it at the time, but that meeting was also President-Elect Josée Dubois’s first ISSVA meeting!
Fast forward to 2018. The World of vascular anomalies has grown dramatically. The workshop this year had 748 attendees, 112 oral presentations and 218 posters. We are more international than ever, with 50 countries represented at the meeting. It was heartening to learn that a large number were attending an ISSVA Workshop for the very first time. Putting together this meeting was a huge endeavor, and we are so grateful to the local hosts, Leo Schultze Kool, Chantel van der Horst, and their colleagues – and to the scientific committee headed by Francine Blei, for their hard work in selecting and organizing the scientific content.
These are exciting times for ISSVA. We are no longer a small society. We now have 353 members, with many membership applications pending. We have a professional administrator, Justin Dodge, who is doing a great job of helping us with day-to-day organizational work and planning strategic initiatives. Among those strategic initiatives (which you will be hearing more about) are plans to hold an annual meeting beginning in 2021, strong consideration for establishing an International Journal of Vascular Anomalies, and hosting educational Webinars on selected topics.
I am honored and excited to be taking on the role of President of ISSVA for the next two years, and I promise to work with the excellent Board of Directors and all of you to continue our trajectory as a vibrant, important international organization dedicated to vascular anomalies.
